CANDIDATE ALBERT BALDEO HELPS TO PREVENT OVERBURDENING OF GROUP
HOMES IN RICHMOND HILL/OZONE PARK AND ENVIRONS
Timely intervention and a campaign of letter writing and calls have
prevented another group home from being set up in the Richmond Hill/Ozone
Park area. The vacant convent of St. Anthony of Padua in Ozone Park
was being considered as a group home by the United Veterans Beacon
House, in addition to the already 15 homes already established by
this group in Queens, Nassau and Suffolk.
Mr. Albert Baldeo, City Council candidate for this area, who was
informed of this proposal by community activist Mr. Mike Duvalle,
joined forces with him, and conveyed the dissatisfaction of residents
in the neighborhood, and pressured the Diocese of Brooklyn "not
to enter into any agreement because that would overburden this neighborhood
with more homes like these."
"There are already 15 such homes in our community, such as
United Cerebral Palsy Association, Samaritan Village, Sheltering
Arms Children, Faith Mission Crisis Center, Office of Children and
Family Srevices. That is more than our fair share. These do not
include the homeless shelters. It is unfair for any community to
be overburdened by these constraints. We have nothing against veterans.
Indeed, they deserve better from the City, but to over saturate
any neighborhood would not be the best solution for community relations
and quality of life," said Mr. Baldeo.
